FortiGate Security Appliances Enable ClaringtonFunds to Block Evolving Threats by Providing Comprehensive Network Protection
SUNNYVALE, Calif., June 30, 2005
- Fortinet - the pioneer and market leader of Unified Threat Management and only provider of ASIC-accelerated, network-based antivirus firewall systems for real-time network protection
-- today announced that ClaringtonFunds (TSX: CFI), a wholly owned subsidiary of Clarington Corporation, which is a financial investment firm with $4 billion in assets based in Toronto, has deployed an array of Fortinet FortiGate™ systems to provide comprehensive network protection for customer data, financial transactions and its mission critical applications. Fortinet's FortiGate systems were chosen over Symantec and other leading firms to deliver an ASIC-accelerated security platform including antivirus, firewall, VPN, intrusion prevention (IPS), content filtering, anti-spam and traffic filtering, in an appliance form factor.
Like many financial organizations, ClaringtonFunds faced the challenge of trying to outpace increasingly sophisticated, blended threats and varied sorts of malware while its business operations expanded. To better protect its expanding operations, ClaringtonFunds sought an alternative to traditional security solutions such as software-based or single purpose non-ASIC security products that rapidly become obsolete considering how quickly the nature of threats change. To aggregate a collection of best of breed security applications, lowering both capital and operational costs, ClaringtonFunds chose a flexible, unified threat management platform that offered them room to expand security features as needed and the ability to adapt to not only changing threats, but allow its network to grow as well.
"By deploying Fortinet's security systems, we paired our more traditional reactive security strategies with a more proactive approach based on the security applications available with the FortiGate systems," said George Ho, technology manager for ClaringtonFunds. "Since the implementation of Fortinet antivirus, we've seen a 90 percent decrease in virus activity alone and have saved both time and money from an administrative standpoint."
Enterprise Protection, Scale and Scope
To secure its national user community, including several regional offices and numerous remote employees, ClaringtonFunds deployed Fortinet's FortiGate integrated security appliances throughout its extended enterprise, mostly to serve as front-line security devices to block blended threats of all types before entering its network.
ClaringtonFunds deployed FortiGate-400 enterprise systems in a cluster for high-availability capabilities to protect its mission critical applications, including systems like Lotus Domino and SQL Server on a Windows platform. FortiGate-60 small/medium business (SMB) security appliances are deployed at branch locations; a FortiWiFi-60 system is deployed at a branch office for secure wireless access; and FortiGate-50A small office security appliances protect ClaringtonFunds' remote employees with home offices.
By installing FortiGate systems at every entry point into the network, ClaringtonFunds is ensuring a high degree of security, even between trusted sources where viruses, Trojans, worms and even phishing attacks can be unknowingly introduced through mobile laptops, add on wireless connections or consumer electronic devices with hard drives attached to the network. Based on the success of the deployment to date, ClaringtonFunds is currently evaluating Fortinet's FortiLog systems, which are dedicated logging and reporting appliances that securely aggregate and analyze log data from multiple FortiGate systems.
"The financial industry historically has been a market segment that relies on mission critical applications more than many others, and leading fund management companies such as ClaringtonFunds are now leveraging best of breed security applications throughout their operations to protect their clients data and their own information assets," said Adam Stein, vice president of corporate marketing for Fortinet. "In the finance industry, a penny saved is a penny earned, and Fortinet is pleased to provide ClaringtonFunds with a wide range of FortiGate integrated security appliances to eliminate unwanted traffic from its network and preserve its customer's valuable transaction data."
